Frequently Asked Questions
There is no GPS connected to COMx
Microsoft have released a hotfix to correct some problems with
USB 2 hubs. If you connect a new universal serial bus (USB) device
to a USB 2.0 hub on a computer, the computer does not detect the
USB device. Additionally, other USB devices that are already connected
to the computer stop functioning, and you have to restart the computer
to detect the USB devices. Full information can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=892050
Jumping Mouse
Some XP users have reported that if a GPS is plugged in whilst
XP is booting, the mouse pointer jumps all over the screen. This
is a know problem with XP and is not the fault of the GPS. Some
customers have found that editing the registry to disable the serial
mouse driver solved the problem.
If you do this yourself, then be very, very careful. Changing
values in the registry can cause Windows to work in unexpected ways
or to stop working altogether!
If we haven't frightened you off completely then follow the next
steps very carefully.
- Click on Start, and then click Run...
- Type in REGEDITand click Ok or just press enter. This
will start a program titled "Registry Editor". On the
left hand side is a folder tree and on the right hand side values
for the currently selected branch of the tree.
- Expand the entry for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. You do this by double
clicking on it or by clicking on the plus symbol to the left of
it.
- You'll now see a list of sub-folders. Expand the sub-folder
for SYSTEM
- Now expand the sub-folder for CURRENT_CONTROL_SET
- Then expand the sub-folder for SERVICES.
- This will give you a huge list. Scroll down the list until you
reach the sub-folder labelled SerMouse and single click
it.
- On the right hand side you will now see a list of entries for
the serial mouse device. Double click on the entry called Start.
- The current value should be 3. Change it to 4 and click ok.
- That's it! Just close the Registry Editor by clicking on the
white cross on the red square at the top right.
The Navigator keeps taking me down very narrow roads
This is most often caused by having the average speeds set too
fast on the minor roads. Navigator calculates the fastest route
by multiplying the distance on each section of road by the distance
of it. Consider the following example:-
1 mile on a road that you can average 20mph takes 3 minutes to
travel. 4 miles on a primary road at 60mph takes 4 minutes. In this
case the fastest route would be the minor road.
I've got my personal system set to
Local Roads of High Importance set to 12 and 10 mph for Urban and
non-urban respectively.
Local Roads set to 10 and 8 mph
Local Roads of Low Importance set to 8 and 5 mph
With these settings it uses local roads if necessary but will avoid
them wherever possible. After you've set them restart the program
and see if it's right for you.
How do I find an address in Europe?
The search option only gives you the option to search the fields
in has in common. Click on the Search Tab on the input panel. Now
check "restrict categories" and untick everything except
roads. You should now see more search field options including road
numbers and districts.
Why can't I find anything in France?
French naming conventions can be a little confusing at first but
there are some simple rules to follow when searching. French town
names are hyphenated but street names aren't; Prefixes such as Le,
La, Les, Des etc are left out.
Examples
Le Touquet search for Touquet (ignore the Le)
Val D'Isere, Val-D'Isere (Hyphen between Val and D')
Les Sables d'Olonne, Sables-D'Olonne (Ignore Les and put a hyphen
between Sables and d'Olonne)
Does Navigator take into account bridge heights?
At the moment Navigator doesn't take bridge heights into account
when planning a route. It is something we are working on and hope
to be able to introduce later this year. Please do let us know if
this is something you would like to see.
Can I plan a route that doesn't use toll roads?
Right at the moment, No. We are hoping this functionality will
be available in a future release. Toll roads and chargeable road
avoidance is now available in Pocket Navigator.
The menus and icons have disappeared!
A few people have had this problem and we think it's caused by
closing the program while still in Navigation Mode. If you have
already installed patch 23
or later then it's quite simple to get it back again. Right click
on the grey toolbar and tick the menu option. You can now click
view, layouts, default layout.
If you delete the settings.sfs file the program will create a
new version for you. For Navigator 4.3, it is stored on c:\Documents
and settings\Logon ID\Appication Data\Navigator\4.3. Navigator 4
stores it in c:\program files\Navigator\config. The Logon ID folder
is the one you select when you logon to your computer. If you can't
see the Application Data folder you'll need to click tools, folder
options, view and tick show hidden files and folders.
When I start GPS tracking I get a message 'GPS data out of map
boundaries'. What is wrong?
There is nothing wrong in this instance. In fact, if you see this
message, it means that the GPS is connected and communicating with
Navigator. The message is simply a warning that a position cannot
be displayed because the coordinates being sent by the GPS are outside
the currently opened map. There are two reasons for this. 1. If
you have an older version of Navigator Europe, make sure that you
have the correct map opened. 2. The GPS has no signal. This is generally
a problem with brand new units which have never acquired a signal
in your country. Most devices remember their last position and transmit
it when they have no signal. The GPS is probably reporting a position
from the country of manufacture. The problem will disappear as soon
as your GPS acquires a signal in your country.
How can I tell which COM port my GPS device is connected to?
Go to My Computer/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager.
In the list expand Ports (COM & LPT). Your device should be
listed here.
How do I uninstall the GPS?
If, for some reason (Perhaps you have decided to use a different
USB socket), you need to uninstall the drivers for the GPS.
1. Plug the GPS into the appropriate socket
2. Go into Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager, Ports (Com
& LPT)
3. Right click on the entry labelled Prolific USB to Serial Bridge
and select uninstall. Follow the on screen directions.
4. Unplug the GPS.

Can I use the speakers in my Touchscreen for driving directions?
In VGA Mode with your PC turned on (Recommended)
- Dial 588998 on your remote control then you will enter factory
setting mode: which shows "--------".
- in factory setting mode, press any numeric button, will save
the setting.
- Settings
- the first 3 blanks will set the factory language mode.
English=1, Spanish=2, French=4, German=8, Italian=16, Chinese=32,
Japanese=64.
For example, if you want to set English, Chinese and Japanese
as factory language mode, please fill in the blank as English+Chinese+Japanese=1+32+64=97,
so you input 097 in first 3 blanks.
English, Spanish and French would be 1+2+4=7 so you would
enter 007.
- The fourth blank is default language setting: English=0,
Spanish=1, French=2, German=3, Italian=4, Chinese=5, Japanese=6
- The fifth blank controls the startup mode
0: Start with Power-off mode when power is connected.
1: Start with Auto Power-on and standby mode when power is
connected.
2: Start with same mode as the mode before power is disconnected.
- The sixth blank is sound setting of VGA mode
0: without sound
1: with sound
- The seventh blank is sound setting of TV function on the
NW618TVT
0: without TV input
1: with TV input
So for example one would enter "0970110"
Which gives them English, Chinese and Japanese as factory languages
097
English Is Default 0
Auto Power-On 1
Sound In VGA On 1
Without TV Input 0 Which comes out to "0970110"
For those of you looking for a code for auto-switching to AV1 for
a reversing camera, sorry there isn't one.
